Ruby Evans said anger fuelled her successful end to a tumultuous Commonwealth Games as she won gold for Wales while Canada's Felix Dolci took his medal haul to six, on the last day of gymnastics in Glasgow.
Evans had arrived in Scotland as a multiple-medal contender but cut a frustrated figure after a plunge from the beam cost her any chance in the all-around competition on Sunday.
The 19-year-old's sixth-placed finish followed Wales narrowly missing out on a medal in the team competition and she opted to withdraw from Monday’s uneven bars final to focus fully on her favourite discipline.
That decision paid off as a high-risk routine earned her a score of 13.500 and eclipsed England duo Abigail Martin and Shantae-Eve Amankwaah, who took silver and bronze with 13.333 and 13.300 respectively.
"I feel like I came out here angry," said Evans, part of the British team that just missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics two years ago.
"I knew I wanted to do a good floor; whether it was third, second or first, I clearly knew I wanted to medal - but I got a gold and I'm really happy for myself."
Dolci has been one of the Games' breakout stars and added to his golds in the team and rings finals with more joy in the vault and horizontal bar.
The 24-year-old, who appeared in the Canadian version of Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year, also picked up a bronze in the parallel bars.
Australia's Jesse Moore won the men's parallel bars, while Breanna Scott secured more gold for the runaway leaders in the medal table in the women's beam.
